Kenyan Reporters Making Waves In International Media Houses

As the media industry continues to grow both nationally and internationally, Kenya has continued to produce some of the best journalists and reporters who graced some of the world’s top media houses.

Over the years, we have seen various Kenyan reporters on the international media houses such as BBC, CNN, and Al Jazeera among others anchoring the news.

Though some journalists like Jeff Koinange have left the international scene, there are still others keeping the Kenyan flag high on that stage. Some of those journalists still working for international media houses;

Kimberley Leonard

Kimberley is one of the few Kenyans who have heard the chance to anchor news in a British-owned media house, Sky News.

Before, only a few people knew she was a Kenyan until one day she posted on her social media a photo of her mother’s Kikuyu-labelled wall clocking.

“I love the fact that my Mum is so happy with her #Kikuyu clock!” she captioned her photo.

Following her post, some local media house went ahead to call her “Kenyan-born journalist”, a reference she rejected.

“Guys – I’m not only Kenyan BORN – I’m Kenyan….you can’t get rid of me like that! lol!”

Kimberley is a news anchor with the vaunted Sky News in the UK. Other than anchoring, she is also a reporter and producer at the station.

Larry Madowo

Since quitting Nation Media Group a few years ago, Larry has been jumping from one international media house to the other. After quitting NTV, he re-owned journalist moved to BBC as a business reporter, a position he never hed for so long before quitting to be the station’s correspondent in North America.

After working as BBC correspondent in the US, covering stories dealing with the racial issues affecting the African-Americans and the US elections, Larry resigned from the station and later moved to Kenya where he soon became CNN’s correspondent for East Africa.

Fast forward, Larry was promoted through the ranks and he is now CNN’s international correspondent and sometimes anchors the news on the stations in Atlanta, US.

Eric Njoka

Eric Njoka is one of the journalists that were fired by K24 last year. Months after being fired by the MediaMax station, Eric took to his social media account to announce that he got a job at World Is One News (WION) – an Indian-based international news channel that broadcast in English for its international audience.

Sophie Ikenye

After working in the Kenyan media houses including NTV Kenya, Citizen TV, and KBC, Ikenye moved to London to work with BBC World Service. In 2009 the celebrated journalist began presenting a program at the station on the radio before the program was moved onscreen three years later.
