Woman Released From KNH After Being Detained For Over A Year

A woman who had been detained at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for over a year was finally released.

Susan Ogolla was detained at the facility because of Kshs1million bill which rose to close Kshs4 million during the period she was detained.

Ogolla was admitted at KNH in June 2020 with a brain tumor.  She was treated and recovered in September 2020 the same year. She could however not leave the facility due to the outstanding bills.

In October 2021, Ogolla’s plight was highlighted by Citizen TV.

“I was discharged in September last year but couldn’t leave because the bill was too high, she said.

“My wife already healed she is still detained at the hospital,” her husband Victor Odipo said at the time.

Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC)  wrote to KNH, asking the hospital to release Ogolla after her story was aired.

KNH however argued that they had failed to reach an agreement with Ogolla and the piece of land they had provided as a collateral could not settle the entire bill.

The family again reached out to Citizen TV and the station wrote to KNH, a move that led to Ogolla being discharged from the hospital on December 10.

“When I went, I found bosses, including the senior most executives. They handed me an enveloped as my Christmas present and asked me to open it. I took it and read it. The first page had the ‘cleared’ stamp and I just broke down,” she narrated.

Her family signed an agreement to settle the bill in due course.
