Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru has ditched Jubilee for the United Democratic Allliance (UDA) led by DP William Ruto.
Waiguru took the bold step after a closed door meeting with the party’s officials at DP Ruto’s Karen residence.
“Wale watu ambao tunahudumia kule mashinani wote wametuambia chama ni UDA na form ni hustler na mpango ni bottom-up…,” said Waiguru while at Karen.
Waiguru was accompanied by close to 23 Members of the County Assembly of Kirinyaga.
While weighing in on the matter, Waiguru’s husband, Kamotho Waiganjo said that he fully supports the step that the governor has taken.
“I support her 110 per cent. That is her prerogative. Respect demands that I support her,” Waiganjo stated.
The lawyer further said that it was solely Waiguru’s decision, to which she had the right and freedom to make.
Waiganjo denied reports doing rounds in social media that he would not support DP Ruto’s UDA in the coming general elections.
“Of course it’s not true,” he responded.
In the past, Waiguru had hinted that she would not be seeking a re-election through Jubilee.
In an interview with Citizen TV, the governor had stated that defending her seat on Jubilee’s ticket will be an uphill task.
She added that the mountain region was not pleased with how Jubilee has been run for the last five years.
“If I ran today on a Jubilee ticket and someone else ran on a different party, even if people felt I had performed , it would be hard to convince them to vote for me,” the governor said last month.
Kirinyaga Women Rep Purity Ngirici who is also eyeing the county’s top seat is yet to make a comment on Waiguru’s move to join UDA.
In the past, Ngirici had hinted that she would ditch UDA incase Waiguru is endorsed for the county’s top seat.
